Where the food goes

Hey! my name is Heila. Thanks for visiting my blog!

International development and food waste are issues that I am extremely passionate about. It all started with my first vacation in a developing country after finishing my army service. Since then, I’ve expanded my knowledge through my studies, traveling and volunteering in Ethiopia and around the world.

Development, especially in the field of agriculture, has increased and changed many societies. New techniques, programs and initiatives such as those of Engineers Without Borders and Netafim, now enable farmers and locals to produce more crops (reference). In many cases, the original amount of produce was enough for their needs and now much remains. I find it a shame for the rest to go to waste. If managed correctly, this could address food security and contribute to a world without hunger.

Being passionate about the issue wasn’t enough for me and I decided to start doing something about it – learning more about it’s complexity, exploring the technologies and ideas which aim to solve it and maybe even come up with a solution myself. In the meantime, my plan is to drive more awareness around the issue of food waste through this blog.

The idea of the blog was actually suggested to me by an amazing lady who participated in the Double You Retreat in Costa Rica, May 2017.

So what’s happening here?

So basically what you are going to read about in this blog is where the food goes. According to the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), a third of all food is wasted! And in developing countries it reaches up to 50%!

How is that possible??

In developing countries the problem is essentially due to inadequate harvest techniques, poor post-harvest management, lack of suitable infrastructure, processing and packaging, lack of marketing information.

So what can we do about it??

I will be interviewing experts and inspiring people in the industry to get these very answers.

If you’d like to be notified when I post each interview, you can sign up to receive updates by clicking on the link below. I promise to only send emails when I have something important to share.

And if you would like to connect around the issue – let me know in the comments below!
